Q - How do I start to BMX?

A - So, you want to be a Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist or just ride BMX for the fun of it, well the best way to start BMX is just to get out and do it.  Once signed up and you have the proper riding equipment, head out to a track for a few practice sessions (they should be able to tell you the schedule) and get familiar with the track. Then try a beginner's race. They have races for every level and age, so you should be able to find one that suits you.

Q - What will I need?

A - Don't be fooled by fancy, expensive bikes.   A $500 bike is not required for you to start to ride BMX style.  Listed below is a check list to help you get prepared.  You can also find out more by checking out the "equipment" section.

If you’re traveling out of your track area, you might want to find out what the proper requirements are for the track you’re planning on riding just in case their requirements vary.

Q - Do I need to be a NBL member to race?

A - Yes.  In order to race at any NBL track you must be a member.   You may be able to catch an open house at a track that usually allows beginner BMX er's to ride the track without being a member just for that day.  However, you probably will need to sign a waiver.

Q - How much does it cost?

A - To sign up with the NBL will cost around $40 or more.  A copy of your birth certificate is also a requirement.  Prices change so you will need to check with a local track or call the NBL for the exact amount.  The NBL number is 1-800-866-BMX1. This covers one full year from the date you signed up.  So, if you joined on July 12, 2003 for example, you are covered until July 12, 2004.

Once signed up with the NBL, you will have the cost of participating in a race.  Race fees do vary from track to track but most are in the $8 range.  Some tracks offer the option to race and receive points only instead of points and a trophy.  Usually if you only sign up for points only it's a little less expensive.
If your planning on attending practices that will also be a cost.  Most are not expensive, ranging from $2 and up.

Q - How do I find a track?

A - Check with your local bike shop to find out where the area tracks are.  The Chamber of Commerce is also a great source not only for your own town but if you’re out of town as well.  A lot of tracks have there own web site up but the NBL or the Michigan NBL have information on their web sites that can help you find a location as well.  Check them out at www.NBL.org or www.mibmx.com
